When this year’s legislative session resumes Monday, I will continue work on reforming the juvenile and criminal justice systems to put greater emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and maintaining family cohesion.
These bills are part of the #EquityAndJustice package I’m jointly sponsoring with Sen. Ricardo Lara, and are focused on needed changes to how California’s criminal justice system treats youths and young adults.
Good news! The Senate approved a package of criminal justice-reform bills that promise sweeping improvements on how youths and young adults are treated under California law. Known as the #EquityAndJustice package and jointly authored with Sen. Ricardo Lara, the future of these much-needed reforms now rests with the Assembly.
Do you know of a deserving local school or non-profit that is in need of a makeover? If so, you have until July 1, 2017 to nominate beneficiaries for a Day of Volunteerism where civic-minded residents spend a day cleaning, painting, repairing old electrical wires and general freshening.
One of the most important roles your elected public servants do in Sacramento each year is adopt California's multi-billion dollar budget. As the new chair of the Senate Budget Committee, I will be overseeing this process over the next few critical weeks.
Beginning today, May 11th, the governor releases his revised budget revenue estimates and additional changes to his budget plan for fiscal year 2017-2018; to view the May Revision, visit the Department of Finance at http://www.dof.ca.gov/. I am also chairing this year's Budget Conference Committee, which consists of representatives from both houses and both parties. It is here where we work out our differences in budget actions taken by our respective budget committees to adopt one budget proposal for the Legislature to pass by June 15th. Agendas for the hearings can be found at http://sbud.senate.ca.gov/agenda.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Below is a sampling of news and information I and my staff have been doing on your behalf.
Chairing the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review
As chair of the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, I convened four hearings over the past month. During these hearings, my colleagues and I considered important issues ranging from potential revenues and regulations for California's marijuana industry, to cost-saving innovations at the State Department of Corrections. These hearings shed light on the work ahead of us this year.
