August 2017 E-Newsletter - Reforming criminal justice and MORE

August 17, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

When this year’s legislative session resumes Monday, I will continue work on reforming the juvenile and criminal justice systems to put greater emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and maintaining family cohesion.

These bills are part of the #EquityAndJustice package I’m jointly sponsoring with Sen. Ricardo Lara, and are focused on needed changes to how California’s criminal justice system treats youths and young adults.

For a summary of bills I hope will be approved and sent on to Gov. Brown before the Legislature’s scheduled Sept. 15 adjournment, click HERE.

Countering childhood adversity is goal of day-long event

I had the honor of speaking to dozens of supporters attending a Policymaker Education Day event last month sponsored by the California Campaign to Counter Childhood Adversity. As I explained, the goal of our work must be to create a California where all children thrive. (Photo by Lorie Shelley).

Artist Lauren Halsey of Los Angeles showcases her work

Congratulations to artist Lauren Halsey of Los Angeles. She is my selection to showcase her work in the Capitol as part of the Senate’s 2017-18 California Contemporary Art Collection exhibit. An L.A. native, Halsey builds fantasy sculptures and environments that remix ephemera she gathers with local geographies, hyperreal nature, technicolors, outer space and Funk. 'Christmas' arrived early for 150 children of low-income families; free laptops, scooters and fun events featured

With more than 400 students and family members in attendance, I had the honor last month to present free donated laptops and scooters to 150 children during a fun-filled fair while families enjoyed a day of free events. The setting was part of my multi-year effort to engage children to stay mentally, physically and nutritionally active. More HERE: (Photo by Tracey Hurd-Parker).

Community Health Town Hall - Friday, Aug. 19th

Please join me for a Community Health Town Hall this Saturday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center Gymnasium.  I’ve partnered with several community groups to put on cooking demonstrations, provide community resources and host a panel discussion to provide you with information on ways to support and grow healthy communities. Food, refreshments, childcare and Spanish/English interpretation will be available.

Goodbye summer interns - you made a difference!

What’s right with this picture?

It’s not the out-of-date sign, which we brought out of storage because the picture fit well with this season’s bright and snappy interns standing in front of the beautiful Rose Garden in Exposition Park outside our District Office. Nor is it because the interns, from left, Jalen Dove, David Cadena, Natalie Wire and Taylor Redmond look like they had fun riding scooters and wrapping gifts.

Nope. What’s right about this picture is that it showcases how bright interns spent their time helping us serve the nearly 1 million constituents of the 30th Senate District. It’s always a pleasure to work with bright, young minds. They will be missed and we look forward to seeing how they continue to serve the public in their future endeavors.
