Assemblywoman Holly Mitchell Sponsors Free Tech & Service Assistance Workshop
Los Angeles - Assemblymember Holly J. Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) hosted a free workshop today bringing residents of the 54th District face-to-face with representatives of their utility companies and service providers to obtain answers to billing questions, resolutions to problems and assistance in using home-related products and electronic devices.
Local utility companies and electronic equipment service providers which participated were AT&T, DirecTV, the Gas Company, Sprint, Time Warner Cable and Verizon. The event began at 10 a.m. Saturday, when consumers were welcomed for customer service on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lasting until 12 noon consumers, encouraged to bring bills and equipment with them, were able to meet with multiple providers in succession at booths clustered on the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw Mall Bridge, an indoor lobby which spans Martin Luther King Boulevard connecting the two sections of the shopping center.
"Constituents complain that getting useful information or assistance from utility and service providers seems to get more difficult as the machinery and paperwork get more complicated," noted Assemblymember Mitchell, who spoke to the crowd and visited each booth. "Whether it's a bill based on a broken meter, a cell phone that keeps losing your contacts, a TV remote nobody can figure out or a computer that won't compute, lack of personalized attention is the underlying problem. This workshop helps fix what's broke."
Dozens of constituents came and many reported getting problems resolved, learning something new or finally getting the contact information to connect with real people with whom they expected follow-up in future. Attendance grew substantially as passersby interrupted their mall shopping to check out the customer service event, which was enlivened by the music of local musicians as snacks were served. Assemblywoman Mitchell promised that she would host a similar event again, in view of the enthusiasm of local participants.
