October 04, 2017

Goals of group: Equity in housing, healthcare, public benefits

SACRAMENTO – Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County, one of the largest and most prominent public interest law offices in the nation, has conferred Sen. Holly J. Mitchell with its 2017 Leadership Award for legislation and advocacy championing rights for struggling families.

NLSLA, as the group calls itself, specializes in areas of law that disproportionally impact the poor, including housing, healthcare and public benefits.

“Senator Mitchell has spent her career fighting to improve the lives of people living in poverty—refusing to make the kind of political compromises that often leave low-income Californians without access to opportunity and justice,” said former California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno, who presented Mitchell with the award at a recent event ath the Skirball Cultural Center in L.A. “She is also a staunch, longtime supporter of legal services, and knows that the laws that protect people living in poverty are meaningless unless there is someone there to ensure they are enforced.”

More than 100 policymakers, lawyers, community advocates and families who have made use of NSLA’s services attended the event.
