[AB] 333 by Sen. Sydney Kamlager, D-Los Angeles, will require prosecutors to obtain a conviction before seeking to provide gang participation, a mandate that prosecutors said would make it harder for them to get gang-related convictions and longer sentences.
The current system of lengthy sentence enhancements "has contributed to California's mass-incarceration crisis," said California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, a defense lawyers' group that supported the bills.
