Senator Bob Archuleta’s Statement on Downey’s Neutral Flag Policy

NORWALK, CA – The following is a statement from Senator Bob Archuleta regarding the Downey City Council’s passage of a neutral flag policy concerning the types of flags allowed to be flown on city property.

I know the members of the City Council, and have worked with them, but I don’t agree with this decision. I feel policy that affects the community should always be fair, equitable and inclusive of everyone.

Having said that, I read the new policy, and it is clear that the City Council still has both the opportunity and the time to reconsider their decision.  And, I am very hopeful that they do just that. We as a community should afford them the opportunity to do so.

I also empathize with our LGBTQ+ neighbors who may feel the new policy is aimed at them. I encourage them to read the new protocol and engage in conversation with their elected representatives on the city council.

Acknowledging Pride Month in June should not be controversial.
