Senator Bob Archuleta Secures $1.5M for New Montebello Brush Fire Station

MONTEBELLO, CA – Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera) has secured $1.5 million in state funds for fire protection infrastructure upgrades in the City of Montebello and its proposal to construct a dedicated Wildland Brush Fire Station.

The project is in response to newly released Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps designating large portions of northern Montebello as moderate, high, and very high fire hazard zones.

“Montebello is a strong and growing city, but with growth comes new challenges,” Senator Bob Archuleta said. “The updated Fire Hazard maps make clear that we must strengthen our local fire protection capabilities now, not later. This new station will protect lives, homes, and businesses, while giving our first responders the tools they need to meet 21st-century wildfire threats.”

Earlier this year, the California State Fire Marshal released updated FHSZ maps for Southern California, identifying elevated wildfire risks throughout the region. The findings underscore the urgent need to modernize local firefighting capacity as communities grow and climate conditions intensify

“This project will transform how we respond to wildfires,” Montebello Fire Chief Fernando Pelayo said. “With a dedicated brush fire station and modern apparatus, we’ll be able to respond faster, protect more homes, and keep our firefighters safer in the field. I want to thank Senator Archuleta for his continued support of our first responders and remind him that this is a critical step toward building a more resilient Montebello.”

The City of Montebello intends to build a state-of-the-art Brush Fire Station on a 5.5-acre city-owned parcellocated within a high fire hazard zone. The Montebello Brush Fire Station Project represents a cost-effective, high-impact investment in wildfire preparedness, public safety, and community resilience.
