Governor Newsom Signs Senator Bob Archuleta’s SB 907 Strengthening California’s DUI Laws

SACRAMENTO, CA – Governor Gavin Newsom today signed Senate Bill 907 by Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera), public-safety legislation strengthening California’s laws against impaired driving and repeat DUI offenders.

SB 907 includes “Braun’s Law,” named in memory of Braun Levi, an 18-year-old Loyola High School student and nationally ranked tennis player who was struck and killed in May 2025 by a suspected repeat drunk driver while walking in Manhattan Beach.

Braun’s Law helps ensure that individuals whose DUI charges are reduced to lesser offenses are formally warned that impaired driving is dangerous to human life and that a subsequent offense resulting in death could expose them to more serious criminal charges, including murder.

For Senator Archuleta, the legislation is deeply personal. His granddaughter, Samantha Alex Robles Haun, was killed by a repeat drunk driver in December 2024.

“Having lost my granddaughter to a repeat drunk driver, this is personal. No family should have to endure what mine has, or what has happened to the Levi family,” Senator Archuleta said. “Nothing will ever bring my Samantha back or bring Braun back to his family, but today California is taking meaningful action to help prevent another family from experiencing this devastating loss.”

Archuleta also recognized Jennifer Levi, Braun’s mother, whose advocacy was instrumental in advancing Braun’s Law.

“Jennifer has shown extraordinary strength and tenacity in turning unimaginable grief into action,” Archuleta said. “Her advocacy for Braun and for other families has been unwavering. I am deeply grateful that she trusted me to stand alongside her in this fight.”

The senator also acknowledged the many families of DUI victims he has met while working on SB 907.

“Throughout this journey, I have met mothers, fathers, spouses, children and other family members whose lives were forever changed because someone chose to drive impaired,” Archuleta said. “They have shared their loved ones’ stories, their grief and their determination to prevent another family from joining a club none of us ever wanted to be part of. Their courage has stayed with me every step of the way, and this law belongs to them, too.”

Governor Newsom signed SB 907 as part of a package of measures strengthening California’s DUI laws and increasing accountability for impaired drivers.

“I thank Governor Newsom for signing SB 907 and standing with victims, families, law enforcement, prosecutors and advocates who have worked tirelessly to make our roads safer,” Archuleta said. “Driving under the influence is preventable. This law sends a clear message that repeat impaired driving has serious consequences and that California will hold offenders accountable.”

Senator Archuleta also thanked Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) for the critical role they played in the passage of this bill.

“Today is about Samantha, Braun and every life lost to an impaired driver,” Archuleta said. “We cannot undo these tragedies, but we can honor those we lost by doing everything we can to prevent the next one.”

SB 907 will take effect January 1, 2027.
