October 2024 Newsletter
Dear Neighbor,
I hope you enjoyed your summer and are now settling into the fall season. It has been a productive last couple of months as my fellow State Senators and I passed legislation, which was sent to Governor Newsom’s desk for his signature. I am pleased to announce the Governor signed six of my bills into law.
During the legislative recess, my District office team and I have been keeping busy visiting the communities in Senate District 30. From supporting local businesses at ribbon cutting ceremonies, to visiting local schools and meeting with city officials on projects to benefit their respective communities and the 30th District as a whole: we are out there and doing our best to serve our constituents.
My Capitol and District office teams and I are pleased that Governor Newsom passed into law several bills, including SB 1336, which will transform vacant buildings at Metropolitan State Hospital into a Mental Healthcare Village. This new community will provide vital mental health treatment and housing for individuals in need. Wherever I can, I will always advocate for the health and safety of our communities.
As always, I stand ready to serve you, and encourage you to contact my offices for assistance or with questions at (562) 406-1001 or visit https://sd30.senate.ca.gov/
God bless,
Chair, Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee

Last month I joined our nation in remembering all of our fellow Americans who died in the 9/11 attacks on that fateful day in 2001, at Rose Hills Memorial Park’s Field of Healing. I was honored to have Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire speak and view the 2,997 American flags displayed representing the first responders, military personnel and civilians we lost.
I toured the grounds of the Metropolitan State Hospital with Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire and L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn, where a mental healthcare village is planned to provide housing and treatment to individuals struggling with mental illness. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1336 into law, approving a measure to help develop a mental healthcare village in the City of Norwalk. My bill, which was championed by Supervisor Hahn, will allow L.A. County to use vacant buildings on the state’s hospital campus to help meet the needs of people with mental illness.
From September 15 thru October 15, the country celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. At present, I have recognized educators and business owners who exemplify dedication, perseverance, and leadership in our community. They are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, shaping future generations and driving economic growth, all while celebrating and preserving the rich heritage of Latino and Hispanic cultures. Please visit my Senate Facebook and Instagram accounts to meet more honorees.
I attended the unveiling of the first hydrogen fueling station at a commercial truck center in the United States. It’s located in the 30th Senate District at Tom’s Truck Center in the City of Santa Fe Springs. This is an important step to expand the availability and usage of hydrogen as a fuel source.
I recently participated in the California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation's Schools Educational Tour. We visited Rose and Alex Pilibos School in Los Angeles, and Vahan and Anoush Chamlian School in Glendale. I joined my fellow California Armenian Caucus members Senator Maria Elena Durazo, Senator Anthony Portantino, Assemblymember Tri Ta, and Assemblymember Laura Friedman. The two schools are leaders in incorporating, technology, music and arts with regular school curriculum.
My staff is available and committed to helping you resolve any issues you have with any state agencies. We will contact a state agency on your behalf to see if we can get your questions answered or matter resolved. You can give us a call at (562) 406-1001.
Sincerely,
Chair, Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee
