California State Senator Bob Archuleta Co-Introduces Senate Resolution 29 Commemorating the Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923

SACRAMENTO – As a member of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus, I am grateful and proud that for the first time in our nation’s history, the United States has formally recognized the Armenian Genocide on its 106th anniversary.

In the California State Senate, I co-introduced Senate Resolution 29 alongside Senators Atkins, Portantino, Wilk, Borgeas, Dahle, Durazo and Hertzberg to properly acknowledge the experiences of Armenians during this historical atrocity.

hat was sanctioned by the Ottoman Empire and begun on April 24, 1915 was the first state sponsored genocide of modern times that resulted in the deaths of 1.5 million victims as they were forcibly marched to their deaths or murdered in an attempt to erase their presence from a region in Asia Minor they had peacefully resided within for approximately four millennia.

California, home to the largest Armenian-American population in the United States, has a unique responsibility to safeguard this historical recognition in order to ensure it is conscientiously taught to future generations in order to prevent the recurrence of genocide.

I am eternally grateful to the Armenian-American community and their diaspora for their commitment to the formal recognition of this atrocity. In order for the present and future generations to learn about the injustices that have befallen our ancestors, there must be a complete and accurate account of their history. Only then can we prevent the issues of today from compounding and developing into the injustices of tomorrow.
